While attempting to tack, the Kiwi's wing didn't "pop" to the other side like it should have. This turned the giant wing into a giant airbrake. They tipped to nearly 45 degrees before wing popped into place and they righted. While they were tilted, Oracle Team USA was forced into a tack. This was a foul against ETNZ, adding insult to injury. OTUSA went on to win, now the Americans trail 6-0 in the first to 9 series.

Nothing bullshit about it, Oracle was clearly caught cheating. The AC45 World Cup was a competition put into place by Oracle, all teams who planned to compete for the Cup were forced to enter and compete around the world for two years or else they weren't eligible for San Fran by Oracle's rules. They are pretty lucky they weren't booted out of the Cup, the jury had testimonies that knowledge of the cheating and cover-up went right to the teams management but OR threw a couple of lowly team members under the bus.

Hiding ballast in the hull warrants a penalty yes, a mechanical failure like this one seen here doesn't warrant one however. If Jeff Gordon`s tire explodes & he his car accidentally takes out 2nd & 3rd place finishers would that warrant a penalty? How about if he had his crew tamper with the car instead. We were caught with illegal ballast in the hull, this $g!t can't be pulled ever in fair competition. Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire & Jason Giambi all fit the bill also, all we can do is try to compete fairly & put the past behind us.

OK, firstly: the AC45 races were defined as being part of the Americas Cup series. It was this way because Oracle said so. In the America's Cup the defender gets to set the rules, and that was a rule they set. So it's more like cheating in qualifying and having to start from pit lane. Setting the rules is such a big advantage it's hard to have much sympathy if it bites them in the butt.

Secondly: this is no bullshit penalty. The sailing community takes cheating really seriously, because mostly it's impossible to detect; it's only because someone was too stupid to remove the weights before the boat left their control that Oracle were caught. The approach isn't like the motor racing one of "if you ain't cheating you ain't trying", it's an honour system. The last major international-level cheating scandal was 1987 - that shows how infrequently it happens. And most of that team were banned for 3 years and the boat owners for 10. Oracle were damned lucky that didn't happen to them: the jury have come right out and said they got off lightly because the jury wanted to see the cup decided on the water. The 1987 incident was a much bigger cheat, but it's not about how big the advantage, it's about holding the line - once you start letting people get away with it you might as well just hand over all the trophies to the guys with the biggest checkbook and the least scruples (take a bow, Larry and Russ).

Kinja'd!!!1

When the boats are up on the hydrofoils they approach 40 knots ~ Amost 50 miles an hours ( or 3x the wind speed — They "generate their own wind" ) If they suddenly lose their balance the lower hull will catch the water and the boat suddenly stops. It's called "Pitch poling". It happens very quickly ( even at slower speeds on a regular cat, there is no time to prepare ) ..... and if you are tied to something, all you are doing is adding and additional "whip motion' when the boat stops and you don't.

Have you actually watched any of the races? I want racing to do 2 things:

1. Amaze me with technology. Boats flying at 50 mph does that.

2. Close racing. I think the largest margin of victory has been about a minute, and we've seen tacking battles in pretty much every race.

If a race does both of those, its a success in my book.

Nope, it's not a clusterfuck— it's just that

a) a lot of folks hate Larry Ellison and are looking for any opportunity to troll;

b) a combination of tough economic times post-2008, during the Greek crisis and high boat cost meant that at least three other teams didn't compete, leading to a small fleet and a lot of folks are looking for any opportunity to troll;

c) the new boats and format are a quantum leap forward from the IACC boats, with unprecedented technology, speed and difficulty to sail which bring with them the steep bit of the learning curve and some missteps and a lot of folks are looking for any opportunity to troll;

d) a lot of folks are looking for any opportunity to troll.

ETNZ has said that if they win the Cup, AC 35 will be in monohulls, but I have to believe that despite the demands and risk, the sailors are racers and going back to boats which can't top 20 kts. will feel like playing in a sandbox...

It's not best of 9 - it's first to 9; best of 17. Team USA started at a deficit due to penalties pre-race for attempting to illegally advance the "one hull design"; effectively making the starting positions NZL 0; USA -2. The US team has won two races and NZL has won 6; bringing their respective totals to 0 and 6. Team NZL must win 3 more races to take the Cup, and Team USA must win 9 more to retain the Cup.

Yes. Huge clusterfuck. I live in SF and it's widely known as "Larry's Toy Boat Race." Only 4 teams entered the LV (because LTBR) - and of those, only one real contender. The City is suing Larry and TAC for misrepresentation - they 'promised' the City X hundreds of millions in revenue and to date they've made less than 20% of those forecasts; costing the taxpayers (but, of course) over $110M thus far. And to make matters worse - the rumors are that Larry has directed Team Oracle USA to sandbag to raise interest and ratings in an attempt to recoup costs. I wouldn't be surprised if suddenly, TeamUSA is untouchable while keeping it close. If you follow the races you can see quite clearly in the early races that Team USA is foiling terribly, tacking terribly and generally screwing the pooch on very simple wind/laline strategies. Larry made a big announcement a few days ago about making a move at the Tactician / Strategist position and re-instated Ben Ainslie as the head of boat strategy. Now, they are quite noticeably faster, cleaner and 'smarter' on the water - turning the tide from being slow in tack and windward, to being blazingly fast at both; unheard-of.

Cluster doesn't begin to describe it.

I'm not into sailing but to be honest these are some of the wickedest machines I've ever seen. They are the super cars of the water and I never tire of seeing them flying on their foils.

When did they start racing the AC45?

The acceleration looked spectacular when the started the downwind leg.

USA topped 47 knots in that race.

It was fun to watch.

There is still an error...

If the American's trail, it should be written " Americans trail 0-6.."

They started racing the 45s in 2011. These are the AC72s, that they started sailing about a year ago. The AC72s didn't race until earlier this summer in the Louis Vuitton Cup.

These are the F1 of sailing-fast, knife-edge handling, technologically advanced and so expensive only a few teams can compete. And like F1, they're dangerous enough to cause injuries and death when things go wrong.

Personally I am hoping ETNZ takes the Auld Mug back to Kiwiland and really does bring back the monohulls with rules that open things up to more competitors.

Did you watch yesterday's racing? Pretty damn good! Unsure what happened to our boys in the first race but that second one was so close. OTUSA seemed to have found some more speed upwind combines with these conditions seeming to suit their boat a lot more.

I think their fine bows (while looking dodgy every time they tack and bury a hull) help when the wind is against tide and slice through the chop a bit better than ETNZ. I'd like to see another race or two in lower winds (14-17) where ETNZ were very competitive to get a real gauge on OTUSA's improvements but it's looking like these last few races will be 50/50. Exciting stuff.
